Shipping Food and Snacks From Thailand: What Clears Customs and What Doesn't
Dried mango flies. Raw pork does not. Both are Thai, both are food, and at the border they live under completely different rules. Customs officers checking a parcel of food are not asking what it cost. They are asking what disease it could carry, and a separate health agency, not the duty office, makes that call.

What Usually Clears Customs
Sealed and shelf-stable is the winning combination. Dried fruit in its retail bag. Instant noodles. Candy, roasted nuts, ground spices, coffee, tea. Nothing that needs a fridge, nothing made of fresh meat or dairy, everything with a printed ingredient list still on the wrapper.
That wrapper earns its keep at inspection. An officer who can read the contents off a factory label rarely needs to open the bag. Loose, unlabeled, home-packed food invites the opposite.
What Almost Never Clears
Fresh meat. Fresh dairy. Fresh produce. Border agencies destroy more of these three categories than anything else in the food lane, because these are where the pathogens and pests live.
The USA, the UK and the EU all draw the same line: animal products from outside their own health zones face bans or tight caps, and Thailand sits outside all three zones. Dried squid in a sealed bag is one conversation with customs. A vacuum pack of raw pork is a very different one.
The US Rule: FDA Prior Notice
Food entering the United States needs a Prior Notice filed with the FDA before the box lands, courier parcels included. The rule dates back to the Bioterrorism Act of 2002, and the FDA's own guidance leaves no room to argue with it:
> "FDA must electronically receive and confirm Prior Notice before a food shipment arrives at the first port in the United States (port of arrival)."
> "Food that is imported or offered for import with inadequate Prior Notice is subject to refusal and, if refused, must be held at the port of entry unless directed to another location."

There is a filing window: 15 days ahead via the FDA's portal, 30 via the broker route. And since a 2025 amendment, food posted by international mail has to carry "the name of the mail service and a mail tracking number" in the filing (FDA constituent update, fda.gov). Postal parcels used to slip through with less scrutiny than air cargo. Not anymore.
The UK and EU Rules: Products of Animal Origin
Anything made from meat, milk, fish or eggs counts as a product of animal origin, and this is the category the UK and the EU police hardest on parcels from outside their trade zones.
The UK bans two groups outright for arrivals from outside the EU:
> "meat or meat products"
> "milk or milk-based products, except powdered infant milk, infant food or special food needed for medical reasons"

Fish travels more freely, up to 20kg per person. Honey caps at 2kg. On the UK corridor the rule reads the same whether the food sits in a suitcase or a courier box.
The EU says it with fewer words:
> "you are not allowed to bring any meat or dairy products"
> "these rules also apply when you carry meat, dairy or plant products in your luggage, or if you order these items online or have them sent by mail."

People quote the first sentence and forget the second. Ordering online or shipping by courier changes nothing.
How to Pack Sauces, Pastes and Liquids
Three layers. The original jar or bottle, sealed. A leak-proof bag around it. Cushioning between the bag and the box walls so nothing grinds against a seam all the way to the border.
Leave the label on. An inspector who can read "fish sauce" and an ingredient list off the bottle has no reason to open it. And a cracked jar does more than ruin a gift: it can hold the entire shipment at inspection while someone works out what leaked. Can I ship Thai snacks like dried mango or shrimp chips abroad?
Usually yes. Sealed, commercially packaged snacks with an ingredient label clear customs more easily than any other food category in the USA, UK and EU, because they contain no fresh meat, dairy or produce and an inspector can verify them without opening the bag.

What happens if a food item isn't allowed at the destination?
