Which Plants Survive the Flight From Thailand, and How Long They Last in the Box

Buyers worry about the wrong thing. The usual fear is that a plant cannot survive four days in a dark box, and the research says a healthy tropical plant survives that comfortably. What actually damages plants in international transit is cold, and the temperatures involved are far milder than most people expect.

The real enemy has a name
It is called chilling injury, and it happens well above freezing. The University of Florida Extension defines it precisely:
"A chilling temperature is any temperature that is cold enough to cause plant injury but not cold enough to freeze the plant. These temperatures usually range from just above 32°F to about 59°F."

Another Extension publication draws the line the same way and adds the reason it catches people out:
"Chilling injury is different from frost and freeze injury and is caused by tissue exposure to temperatures above the freezing point and below 46°F–54°F [8°C–12°C]"
"The majority of the foliage plants grown in Florida are subtropical and tropical in origin and are susceptible to damage at temperatures below about 50°F [10°C]"

Fifty degrees Fahrenheit is a mild spring afternoon in London or New York. It is also enough to mark a plant that grew up in Thailand. Nothing has to freeze for the damage to happen.
Exposure time matters as much as the number on the thermometer, and the damage does not always show up immediately. On Spathiphyllum, "symptoms appeared within 24 hours for 'Mini' and 5 days for '5598' after initial exposure to 38°F", and "visible injury ranging from necrotic lesions to complete plant death occurred when plants were exposed to 38°F or 45°F for 5 days" (Chilling Injury in Tropical Foliage Plants I, Spathiphyllum, EP101, UF/IFAS Extension). On Aglaonema the count kept rising after the cold event: "the number of leaves injured continuously increased for up to 10 days" (EP103, UF/IFAS Extension).
That last detail is worth holding on to. A plant that looked fine on arrival and declined over the following week was probably damaged in transit, not by the new owner.
Shipping temperatures, family by family
These are the temperatures the growing literature specifies for transport, not for the windowsill.

Anthurium is the most cold-sensitive of the group and the research on cut Anthurium is blunt about where the line sits: "temperatures below 12°C induce symptoms of chilling injury such as brown spots on the Anthurium spathe", and "at 8°C both water uptake and transpiration will be hampered and chilling symptoms (e.g. blueing and browning of the spathes) will appear" (Postharvest Spectral Light Composition Affects Chilling Injury in Anthurium Cut Flowers, PMC, NCBI). The same paper sets the storage window: "Anthurium is a tropical cold sensitive plant, which needs to be stored at 12.5–20°C."
Philodendron carries a specific early warning sign, which is useful for anyone inspecting a delivery: "chlorosis of lower leaves. Exposure to 33–40°F for several hours" (EP150, UF/IFAS Extension). Yellowing on the lowest leaves after a flight is a cold symptom, not a watering mistake.
Aglaonema and Dieffenbachia are Araceae, the same family as Monstera, Philodendron and Anthurium, so their measured thresholds are the closest published guide to how a Monstera behaves in a cold hold. No published study gives Monstera its own number.
How long a plant can go dark and dry
This is the question buyers actually ask, and there is a real measurement behind the answer.
Researchers put Phalaenopsis orchids through simulated shipping, in the dark, without water, and tracked what happened:
"We investigated the relationship between simulated shipping (SS) without watering or light and post-shipping growth and flowering of Phalaenopsis Sogo Yukidian 'V3'. [...] Once DSS duration exceeded 40 days, the leaf-yellowing rate increased rapidly. [...] The results demonstrate that drought stress from long-term shipping (>40 days) delayed flowering."

Forty days. The breaking point in the dark, without water, for a tropical orchid is measured in weeks, not days. A shipment from Thailand that lands in 2 to 4 working days is nowhere near it.
That is the whole point. Darkness and a dry root ball are survivable at courier timescales. Six hours in a cold hold is not. Which is why the temperature control matters far more than the speed, and why a slow warm route beats a fast cold one.
The same figure has not been published for Dendrobium, for Monstera or for succulents, and no honest guide should invent one.
Why the roots arrive bare
Plants are shipped bare-root, with new sphagnum moss. That is partly regulatory, because soil is banned by most importing countries, and partly practical. Fresh moss holds moisture against the roots for the length of the trip without carrying the pathogens a used growing medium would, and it weighs a fraction of what soil weighs in an air freight box.

What to expect when the box opens
Pale or dry roots after transit are normal. Yellowing on the lowest leaves may be a cold symptom rather than a shipping one, and the Aglaonema study is the reason to keep watching for a week or two rather than judging on day one.
Unpack the same day, pot into a free-draining mix, and keep the plant warm. Anything above the thresholds in the table is enough. Cold is what causes the injury, so a warm and humid spot out of direct sun is the recovery condition, not a cool one.
