Air Cargo or Courier From Thailand: Which One the Shipment Actually Needs
A pallet of samples, ten boxes of spare parts or a crate of finished stock has to leave Thailand. It travels one of two ways: as air cargo booked through a freight forwarder, or as a courier parcel under one door to door booking. The two channels use different transport documents, a different weight formula and a different price structure.

What paperwork separates air cargo from courier
A courier shipment moves under one waybill that covers pickup, flight and delivery in a single contract. Air cargo splits the same trip into two documents: a Master Air Waybill between forwarder and airline, and a House Air Waybill between forwarder and shipper.
"The Air Waybill (AWB) is a critical air cargo document that constitutes the contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier" (Air Waybill, IATA, iata.org). "The Electronic Air Waybill Resolution 672 (MeA) removes the requirement for a paper AWB" (e-freight, IATA, iata.org). Dragon Courier issues that document once per shipment and the same reference follows the box to the door.
"A Master Air Waybill (MAWB) is produced by the airline, and confirms that a consignment of cargo has been shipped" (VEXP110100, HMRC internal manual, gov.uk). "Freight agents use the Master air waybill issued by the airline to create their own House air waybills (HAWB) to issue to their individual customers" (VEXP110200, HMRC internal manual, gov.uk). On the cargo side the shipper holds the house document and the airline holds the master.
How the volumetric weight math changes the price
Chargeable weight decides the invoice on both channels, and the two channels do not divide by the same number. Air cargo divides length by width by height in centimetres by 6,000. Express and courier networks divide by 5,000.
"To determine the volumetric rate, the general rule is to divide the volume of the shipment in cubic centimeters by 6000" (Air Cargo Tariffs and Rules: What You Need to Know, IATA, iata.org). "Whichever is higher, the volumetric weight or actual weight, that is the amount that will be used for pricing the air freight cost" (IATA, Air Cargo Tariffs and Rules).
Blue Dart, the express service Dragon Courier books for faster deliveries, prints its own formula in its terms. "Volume weight of the shipment, in kilograms, is its gross cubic volume in cubic centimeters divided by 5000" (Terms and Conditions, Blue Dart, bluedart.com).
A box of 60 by 50 by 40 centimetres, 15 kilograms on the scale, has a volume of 120,000 cubic centimetres. Divided by 5,000 the courier chargeable weight is 24 kilograms. Divided by 6,000 the air cargo chargeable weight is 20 kilograms. Both figures beat the 15 kilograms on the scale. Where the price actually crosses over
An air cargo freight rate covers the flight. A courier rate covers the flight, the clearance and the delivery.
"They do not include the charges for services such as transshipment, customs clearance, pick-up, delivery, terminal, storage, etc., unless indicated" (Air Cargo Tariffs and Rules: What You Need to Know, IATA, iata.org). Each of those items is billed on top of the cargo rate, by the forwarder, the terminal or the broker. Dragon Courier's price already contains the clearance and the door delivery, with duty and tax inside the fee on the USA, EU, UK, Canada, Norway, Switzerland and UAE.
What cannot fly on either channel
Dangerous goods rules apply to cargo and courier alike, because both sit inside the same aircraft.
"The IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) manual is the global reference for shipping dangerous goods by air and the only standard recognized by airlines" (Dangerous Goods Regulations, IATA, iata.org). The 67th edition took effect on 1 January 2026. "Lithium batteries, shipped by themselves are restricted to carriage on cargo aircraft only" (Fact Sheet, Lithium Batteries, IATA, iata.org). "All shipments of lithium metal batteries and lithium ion batteries when shipped by themselves... are required to be shipped at a state of charge not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity" (Fact Sheet, Lithium Batteries, IATA, iata.org).
Dragon Courier does not send batteries, religious items or anything illegal, to any country. A box held at a declaration check on either channel pays storage, and a parcel stuck in customs is chased faster the earlier it is reported.
Thai Customs Department's role in getting the box out
Every shipment leaves Thailand through the same export declaration, cargo or courier, before it reaches an aircraft.
"Exporters send the information by themselves, or Exporters assign customs broker to send the information, or Exporters assign service counter to send the information" (Procedures and Documentary Requirement, Thailand National Trade Repository, thailandntr.com). The same portal lists the papers behind that filing: an invoice, a packing list where one applies, and an export licence where the goods are restricted under the relevant law. Is air cargo cheaper than a courier for shipping from Thailand?
The air cargo rate is the flight only. Terminal handling, customs brokerage and the final delivery are billed on top, each with its own minimum. A courier price from Dragon Courier already includes clearance, delivery and, on the main markets, duty and tax, so for parcels and boxes the courier price is usually the lower total.
