Shipping a Suit From a Bangkok Tailor to the UK and the EU: VAT, Duty and What Is Paid on Delivery

A 2 kg two piece suit from a Bangkok tailor to the UK is 2,196 THB on the tailor price list of 3 August 2026, duty and tax included. The same suit to an EU zone 1 address is 2,783 THB, also duty and tax included. Both numbers already carry the VAT and duty a UK or EU address would otherwise owe, so nothing further is billed when the box arrives. The arithmetic behind the two numbers differs by market.
What does it cost to ship a suit from Bangkok to the UK or the EU?
A 2 kg two piece suit costs 2,196 THB to the UK and 2,783 THB to an EU zone 1 address, both duty and tax included, on the tailor price list of 3 August 2026. Shirts and ties, at 0.5 kg, cost less on both routes.
Destination | 0.5 kg (shirt, tie) | 2 kg (two piece suit) |
|---|---|---|
UK | 1,226 THB | 2,196 THB |
EU zone 1 | 1,540 THB | 2,783 THB |
USA | 459-624 THB | 1,292-1,474 THB |
Thai Baht, duty and tax included, tailor price list of 3 August 2026. A box is billed on its actual weight or on the space it occupies in the hold, whichever is greater, from 0.1 kg up to 30 kg. No discount applies for a larger order and no surcharge applies for a remote address.
The price above covers the customs bill on the suit itself. It does not answer what that bill would have been without it, which is the number a customer compares it against.
What does UK customs charge on a suit above 135 pounds?
UK customs charges VAT and, above 135 pounds, a customs duty set by the fabric's tariff code, both collected from the recipient unless the shipment is duty inclusive. A wool suit carries a published duty rate of 12 percent.
"You'll be charged Customs Duty on goods sent from outside the UK if they're either: excise goods [or] worth more than £135."
Source: "Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad", GOV.UK, section Tax and duty, https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty.
On goods worth more than £135 in total, GOV.UK states:
"You will have to pay VAT to the delivery company either before the goods are delivered or when you collect them."
Source: "Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad", GOV.UK, section Tax and duty, https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty.
The standard UK VAT rate is 20 percent, charged on the value of the suit and its shipping. The duty rate depends on the fabric: a suit made from wool or fine animal hair sits under commodity code 6203 11 00 00, published on the UK trade tariff service as a "Third country duty" of 12.00 percent for goods from any country with no preferential agreement with the UK, legal base The Customs Tariff (Establishment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020, S.I. 2020/1430. Thailand has no free trade agreement with the UK and does not appear on the country list of the Developing Countries Trading Scheme, so a suit from a Bangkok tailor pays the third country rate, not a reduced one. A cotton or synthetic fabric can sit under a different code and a different rate: check the Trade Tariff service for the exact fabric, or ask the tailor to declare it. A full breakdown of how HMRC values a shipment and what the handling fee adds on top is in the guide on cost to ship from Thailand to the UK.
Does the 39 pound gift allowance help?
The 39 pound gift allowance does not apply to a tailored suit, because the suit was purchased rather than given away, and the rule requires both. A parcel qualifies as a gift only under specific conditions set by GOV.UK.
"VAT is not charged on goods that are gifts worth £39 or less."
Source: "Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad", GOV.UK, https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad.
"To qualify as gifts, goods must be: described as gifts on the customs declaration / for a birthday, anniversary or other occasion / bought and sent between individuals (not companies) / intended for personal use."
Source: "Tax and customs for goods sent from abroad", GOV.UK, section Gifts, https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/gifts.
A suit sent by a tailor shop to the customer who paid for it fails the "bought and sent between individuals (not companies)" condition on both counts: it was bought, and it was sent by a business. The 39 pound threshold, and the wider 135 pound threshold, stay irrelevant to a duty inclusive tailoring shipment either way, since nothing is billed to the recipient on arrival.
What does EU customs charge on a suit, and does it vary by country?
EU customs charges VAT from the first euro of value, at the rate set by the destination country, plus a customs duty that depends on the value of the suit and its fabric. The VAT exemption that used to cover small parcels was removed in 2021.
"They abolish the VAT exemption for imported goods below EUR 22 as of 1 July 2021"

Since that date, an EU parcel of any value needs an import declaration and VAT is due on the goods regardless of price. The rate is set at national level, not by Brussels, so it changes by destination.
Country | Standard VAT rate |
|---|---|
Germany | 19% |
France | 20% |
Italy | 22% |
Netherlands | 21% |
Spain | 21% |

A wool suit under commodity code 6203 11 00 00 carries a Common Customs Tariff duty of 12 percent above the low value threshold, the same rate as the UK. A cotton or synthetic suit can sit under a different line of the tariff, so the fabric decides the rate before 12 percent is assumed.
What changed on 1 July 2026 for parcels under 150 euros?
On 1 July 2026 the EU stopped exempting parcels worth up to 150 euros from customs duty. A flat duty of 3 euros per item took its place and runs until 1 July 2028, after which the normal tariff rate applies to those parcels as well.
"The €3 temporary customs duty is a flat fee, which will apply until 1 July 2028, after which normal customs duties will apply."
Source: Guidance and legal text on temporary flat fee on low-value imports, Taxation and Customs Union, European Commission, 8 June 2026, under Council Regulation (EU) 2026/382.
Consignment value | Customs duty in the EU | Who owes it on a duty exclusive shipment |
|---|---|---|
Up to €150 | €3 flat, per item, until 1 July 2028 | The recipient, added to VAT |
Above €150 | Common Customs Tariff rate for the fabric (12% on a wool suit, code 6203 11 00 00) | The recipient, added to VAT |
Until 30 June 2026 a suit under 150 euros paid VAT and no duty. A suit above 150 euros paid the full tariff rate then and pays it now. The reform touches the cheap parcel, not the suit. None of the three figures change what a duty inclusive shipment costs the recipient, since the duty sits inside the price already charged in Bangkok.
What does duty inclusive shipping remove for the person receiving the suit?
Duty inclusive shipping removes every customs charge from the delivery: no VAT collected at the door, no duty invoice, no handling fee added by the local delivery company. The box is released and handed over the way any local parcel would be.
Duty exclusive | Duty inclusive | |
|---|---|---|
VAT | Billed to the recipient before release | Included in the tailor's price |
Customs duty | Billed to the recipient before release | Included in the tailor's price |
Handling fee of the local delivery company | Can be added on top | Not charged |
Paperwork at the door | Signature or online payment before delivery | None |
Dragon Courier runs duty inclusive on the USA, the UK, the EU, Canada, Norway, Switzerland and the UAE. The question to settle at the shop, before the suit leaves Bangkok, is whether that particular shipment is booked duty inclusive or duty exclusive: a duty exclusive parcel still follows the rules above, charged to the person opening the door.
What does the tailor need before the suit ships?
The tailor needs the full delivery address with a working local phone number, confirmation the shipment is booked duty inclusive, and an itemised description of the contents rather than a generic label like "clothing."
Collection runs from the shop in Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. A shop in another city sends the finished suit to the Dragon Courier office first, which adds a day at the start of the journey.
Shipping runs by air, door to door. The transit time for the UK or an EU country is quoted with the price when the tailor books, and tracking is issued on the day of export. No signature is collected on delivery. Payment is settled before export, and an alteration made after the suit lands turns into a second international shipment each way, so the last fitting before departure is the one that counts.
A suit shipped after the customer has already flown home follows the same duty inclusive rule, covered in the guide on shipping clothes from Thailand. For the wider tailoring shipping service or for how duty inclusive shipping works in general, the guide on DDP shipping explained covers the same idea across every category Dragon Courier ships.

Does the price on the tailor's list already include VAT and duty?
Yes, on a duty inclusive route. The 2,196 THB UK price and the 2,783 THB EU zone 1 price for a 2 kg suit, tailor price list of 3 August 2026, already carry the destination VAT and customs duty inside the number. Nothing further is billed when the box is delivered.
What happens if a shipment is booked duty exclusive instead?
The recipient pays VAT and, above the relevant threshold, customs duty directly to the delivery company before the box is released, plus a handling fee in many cases. Confirming duty inclusive or duty exclusive with the shop before the suit leaves Bangkok avoids that bill arriving unannounced.
Does the 39 pound UK gift rule or the low value EU exemption reduce what a suit pays?
No. A tailored suit was purchased, not given away between individuals, so the UK gift threshold does not apply, and the EU has charged VAT on parcels of any value since July 2021. Below 150 euros the EU customs duty is a flat 3 euro fee rather than zero.
How long does a suit take to arrive in the UK or an EU country?
The transit time is quoted with the price when the tailor books the shipment, on top of the time the tailor needs to finish the garment. The box travels by air, door to door. Tracking is issued on the day of export and can be shared with anyone at the delivery address.
What happens if the suit needs an alteration after it arrives?
It travels back to Bangkok and returns once altered, as a second international shipment each way rather than a local repair, with its own transit time and its own duty inclusive price on top. Getting the fit right at the last fitting before departure avoids that extra round trip and the extra cost that comes with it.
